An assignment on one of Centrica’s offshore oil platforms offers a snapshot of the challenges and rewards of working in high-pressure environments. With a brief to capture both the scale of the operation and the everyday lives of the workforce, Charlie first ensures that his
safety accreditation is up to scratch – an ongoing process in a sector where the technology is advancing rapidly – and then sets about acclimatising to the setting. Positioning himself to identify and execute the best shots takes planning and preparation. After that, it’s a matter of acting with an assurance borne of years in the field while staying alert to passing opportunities.

Take a brief. Deliver on it. Then go a little bit further. That’s the mantra when an opportunity arises to exceed expectations by deploying a variety of skills. Tasked with visiting a factory on behalf of Pressure Technologies, Charlie first agrees the parameters of the project with
his client – in this instance, reportage photography in an industrial setting – and then sets about meeting those objectives. But that’s not the end of the story. The virtues of efficiency are many, and Charlie’s innate flexibility and distinctive aesthetic allow him to add abstract still life to the day’s itinerary. The designers appreciate the extra material and the client is getting exceptional value for money. Everybody’s happy.

In a competitive world, you have to work hard to stay in the game – building relationships that will thrive under pressure and deliver benefits to all involved. As well as acting on behalf of creative agencies across a range of sectors and photographic styles, Charlie also enjoys working directly with clients as a preferred supplier. Not that this prized status comes easily. After a lengthy and rigorous selection process, he is now on the roster of National Grid and RWE Npower. It’s already looking like energy well spent.
